Wednesday May 26th 8:30 am depart Taku Harbor into Saginaw Channel. Killer whales!!.... once again the show begins, so fascinating to watch them.

1:00pm Arrive at the beautiful city of Juneau. The Mendenhall Glacier is a marvellous back drop to the Auke Bay harbour.
Top up on fuel and tie the lines, we will be here a few days.

It’s pick your spot on the dock as we are ahead of the summer rush and we pick the one with the great view, Mendenhall off the stern and the mountains of Glacier Bay in the distance ahead.
Once docked we realize we are adjacent to Cinnamon Girl with Marc and Myra from Seattle, cruisers we met along the way, so happy hour begins and we trade boat tours.
Thursday May 27th 9:00 am Wayne and Larry make their way up the dock to pick up a rental car so we can tour the town in style. The locals tell us the best buy is, Rent a Wreck. 1st stop Mendenhall Glacier - Spectacular! A “drive to” glacier, that sprawls between mountains for some 12 miles, before showing its ice face across Mendenhall Lake.
Flowing beside the glacier is one of the most exhilarating falls we’ve experienced. After the self guided tour in the museum then it is a must to take the hike to the falls and catch the spray upon your face.

Then off to the Shrine of St. Therese where you can experience a self guided tour of the chapel, built in the late 1930’s.

As we drive up the highway to get some scenic pictures from Douglas Island, we spot the cruise ships at dock and Juneau, the shopping hub of SE Alaska, as this is where the region’s largest stores are located, along with the famous Mount Roberts Tramway.

We carry on into town for a touch of shopping for Bev and a must visit to the Red Dog Saloon for Gayle. She had missed it 15 or so years ago when she toured with her mom.

Winding our way up the steep slopes of town to catch a photo of the Governor’s Mansion, Senator Winters and Mikkelsen and their wives debate whether they should stop for tea. Alas, Sarah is no longer home. We think we could have pulled it off.

Next stop is Last Chance Mining Museum. It was closed for lunch 12:00 to 3:30 PM. Not sure what that is about, but needless to say we did not tour the museum. But a nice walk through the woods and a drive across a long wooden bridge which didn’t in still our confidence.

Another full day in Alaska and back to the Steel Eagle for happy hour and sun bathing on deck.....honestly.....it is 83*F here today!!!

It is prime rib dinner onboard including Champaign and gifts...yes the men need some Alaskan jewellery.... and the crew that is leaving decide....

that Steel Eagle needs an Alaskan Flag to accent the American Flag on board.

Sunday May 30 Off to McDonalds for breakfast and internet as it is the best place in town to surf the net for free.....inside and out....!!!

The locals did inform us that the Alaska State Museum is a must see...and they were right, well done Juneau!!!

The ladies (Wendy, Bev and Gayle) head up to complete some of the pink jobs, this one being laundry, and Wendy puts too much soap in the washer and.....SUDS EVERYWHERE!!!

Monday May 31 The guests must depart Steel Eagle and Bev needs a ride up.....she is reluctant to leave but all good things must come to an end!
Still Heading North!!!

  1. I see that Buck and Dove got the boot from the SS Minnow. Well, they had a good run. How much further for the Skipper and Wendy? Anchorage? Weather is lousy here, no sense coming home.
